A massive three-alarm fire tore through a seven-story Upper East Side apartment building on Friday morning, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky.

What Happened: The FDNY received a call just after 10:00 am about a fire on roof of 305 East 95th Street between 2nd and 1st Avenues in Yorkville, drawing a flood of emergency responders, CBS New York reports.

The Big Picture: The situation quickly escalated to a three-alarm inferno, with bright orange flames and thick black smoke shooting from the structure, video posted to Citizen shows.

By The Numbers: Over 40 FDNY units and 170 members, including EMS workers, responded to the scene. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Zoom In: Residents reported hearing an explosion when the fire started, CBS New York notes. “The entire building shook. I actually thought something, like a truck, drove into the building, or even an earthquake,” one woman said.

What’s Next: Flames spread to the building’s cockloft and scorched three apartments before firefighters contained it, CBS New York explained. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
