Wheel Thieves Strike Upper East Side, Leaving Cars on Milk Crates

A surge of organized wheel thefts is plaguing the Upper East Side, with thieves leaving vehicles teetering on milk crates.

Skilled thieves are targeting parked cars across the Upper East Side, stealing wheels and leaving vehicles propped on milk crates in a wave of thefts that has residents on edge.

Why It Matters: The organized theft ring operates with alarming efficiency, stripping all four wheels from vehicles in under two minutes while targeting common models like Honda CRVs for quick resale, per Our Town.

By the Numbers: The 19th Precinct recorded 18 wheel theft incidents in June and July 2025 alone, Upper East Site was first to report, though actual numbers are likely higher as many victims don’t file reports, OurTown added.

Zoom In: A NextDoor video captured a July 11 incident at Third Avenue and East 89th Street, showing a two-person crew in dark clothes and hoodies approaching a vehicle with a car jack and milk crate.

State of Play: Thefts occurred at locations along Park Avenue and multiple addresses along First, Third, and York Avenues, Our Town and Upper East Site note. After stealing the wheels, thieves leave cars balanced precariously on milk crates.

What They’re Saying: “They can get all four wheels off a car in under two minutes,” said a police source, according to Our Town.

What’s Next: The 19th Precinct issued a Crime Prevention Division flyer on August 13 advising residents to park in well-lit areas and install high-quality locking lug nuts to deter thieves.
