Xi’an Famous Foods is opening a second Upper East Side location at 1390 1/2 Second Avenue between East 71st and 72nd streets, expanding its presence where neighbors have already embraced the popular chain for more than a decade.
What’s New: A sign posted inside the front door of the new restaurant, which previously housed 72nd Street Gourmet Deli, reveals the chain’s plans for the space.
Why It Matters: The expansion underscores the Upper East Side’s appetite for the chain’s spicy noodles and authentic Chinese street food.
Zoom In: The existing location at 328 East 78th Street between First and Second avenues is one of the company’s busiest stores, according to Upper East Site, which reported a two-to-three month timeline for the new restaurant’s opening.
What They’re Saying: “[The] UES has treated us well there since 2014, all the way through the pandemic, and we are there for many years to come still,” a representative from Xi’an Famous Foods told East Side Feed.
The Big Picture: Founded by CEO Jason Wang’s father, David Shi, in a Queens shopping mall in 2005, Xi’an Famous Foods has grown to 16 locations in New York, plus one each in Massachusetts and Virginia, Upper East Site notes.
